Wrap It. Bin It. Never Flush It.
By the eva team · · 1 min read
Used disposable period products should be wrapped and placed in a waste bin—not flushed down the toilet. Learn how to dispose of pads, tampons and applicators discreetly, what to do when a bathroom has no bin and how reusable products should be handled differently.
1. Finished With A Period Product—Now What?
Changing your period product is only one part of period care. Used disposable products should be wrapped securely and placed in the correct waste bin. You do not need to feel embarrassed—period waste is a normal part of managing menstruation.
2. Wrap It Before You Bin It
Fold or roll a used pad inward, then wrap it in its original wrapper, toilet paper, tissue or another suitable material. Place the wrapped product inside the designated waste bin. Tampons and disposable applicators should also go into the bin.
3. Never Flush Period Products
Do not flush pads, tampons or other disposable menstrual products down the toilet. Place them in a waste bin instead. “Flushable” should never be assumed unless the manufacturer and local waste system specifically say so.
4. No Bin In The Bathroom? Be Prepared
Carry a small opaque disposal pouch in your period kit. When there is no suitable bin, wrap the product, seal it inside the pouch and take it to the nearest appropriate waste bin. Do not leave it on the floor, behind the toilet or inside an open space.
5. Reusable Products Need Different Care
Reusable pads and period underwear should be washed, dried and stored according to their instructions. A reusable menstrual cup is removed, emptied, rinsed and used again; the cup itself does not go into the toilet or bin after every use. Follow the product’s directions for cleaning, sanitising and end-of-life disposal.
6. Dispose. Wash Your Hands. Done.
After changing and disposing of a menstrual product, wash your hands with soap and water. Proper disposal does not need to be complicated: wrap disposable products, place them in a bin and never flush them.
