The words vulva and vagina describe different parts of the body. The vulva is the external genital area you can see, while the vagina is the internal muscular canal leading from the vaginal opening to the cervix. Learning the correct names can make body care, periods and health questions easier to understand and discuss.
A period leak can happen at school, while travelling, during sports or even at home. It may feel embarrassing in the moment, but it is a common problem that can be handled. Learn how to cover the mark, change your period product, clean up and ask for help without shame.
Pads, period underwear, tampons and menstrual cups manage period flow in different ways. Pads and period underwear absorb flow after it leaves the body, while tampons absorb and cups collect it inside the vagina. There is no single product that suits everyone—you can choose based on your comfort, flow, activities and ability to use and clean the product safely.
Yes, you can swim during your period. A tampon, menstrual cup or specially designed period swimwear can help manage the flow while you are in the water. Choose the option that feels comfortable, follow its instructions and carry a few spare supplies for after swimming.
A pad should be changed regularly even when your flow is light. As a practical guide, change a disposable pad every few hours—often around every four to six hours—and sooner when it feels full, damp, uncomfortable or begins to leak. Regular changes help you stay fresh and comfortable during your period.

Severe pain or heavy bleeding that repeatedly disrupts school deserves medical attention.
A menstrual cup is a small, flexible product inserted into the vagina to collect period flow rather than absorb it. Some cups are disposable, while reusable cups can be emptied, washed and used again. Cups may take practice, so learning slowly and following the instructions for your specific product is important.

A “period rash” usually means irritation of the sensitive skin around the vulva, groin or inner thighs. Moisture, heat, rubbing, long pad use and scented products can contribute to itching, redness or soreness. Regular product changes and gentle skin care can help reduce irritation.

Vaginal discharge is a normal mixture of moisture, cervical mucus, microorganisms and cells naturally shed from the vaginal lining. Fluid from the vaginal walls helps keep the vagina moist, while the cervix produces mucus that changes during the menstrual cycle. These secretions travel through the vagina and leave through the vaginal opening.
Intimate itching, burning or pain can come from irritation, infection, a skin condition or urinary problems. Because several conditions can cause similar symptoms, appearance alone cannot reliably identify the cause. Gentle care may reduce mild irritation, but symptoms that persist, worsen or appear with unusual discharge, odour, sores, fever or pelvic pain should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
Periods are a normal biological process, but myths, teasing and silence can make them feel embarrassing. Learning to use clear language, ask for what you need and choose trusted people to speak with can make period care easier. You decide what information feels private and how much you want to share.
Used disposable period products should be wrapped and placed in a waste bin—not flushed down the toilet. Learn how to dispose of pads, tampons and applicators discreetly, what to do when a bathroom has no bin and how reusable products should be handled differently.
