How Often Should You Change a Pad?
By the eva team · · 1 min read
A pad should be changed regularly even when your flow is light. As a practical guide, change a disposable pad every few hours—often around every four to six hours—and sooner when it feels full, damp, uncomfortable or begins to leak. Regular changes help you stay fresh and comfortable during your period.
1. How Long Can You Wear One Pad?
Do not wait for a pad to leak before changing it. Pads should be changed every few hours, even on lighter-flow days. Your flow, comfort and the product’s instructions can help you decide when it is time for a fresh one.
2. Aim For Every Few Hours
A helpful general guide is to change a disposable pad approximately every four to six hours. You may need to change it sooner on heavier-flow days, while exercising or whenever it begins to feel damp or uncomfortable.
3. Change It Sooner If It Feels Full
Change your pad sooner if it feels soaked, damp, shifted out of place, uncomfortable or close to leaking. Your flow may change throughout the same period, so your pad-changing routine does not need to stay identical every day.
4. Wash Your Hands Before And After
Wash your hands before putting on a clean pad and again after changing and disposing of the used one. This is a simple part of good menstrual hygiene.
5. Plan Ahead For School And Sleep
Carry spare pads and a small disposal bag when you are away from home. Before sleeping, put on a fresh pad designed for overnight use and change it after waking. Choose the absorbency and length that help you feel secure without wearing the same pad for an unnecessarily long time.
6. Changing Every Hour Or Two? Tell Someone
If you regularly soak through a pad every one to two hours, need to change during the night to prevent leaks or your bleeding interrupts school and everyday activities, your flow may be unusually heavy. Tell a trusted adult or healthcare professional so it can be checked.
