By the eva team · · 1 min read

Clear or white vaginal discharge is usually a normal part of puberty and vaginal health. Its amount and texture may change during the menstrual cycle, and it may dry slightly yellowish on underwear after being exposed to air. Learn what healthy discharge commonly looks like and which changes deserve medical advice.

Healthy discharge is commonly clear or white. It may be thick and sticky on some days or slippery and wet on others. Discharge may also look slightly yellow after drying on underwear because normal secretions can change colour when exposed to air.

You may notice more discharge on some days and less on others. Hormone changes during the menstrual cycle can affect how much mucus the cervix and vaginal walls produce, so your discharge does not need to look identical every day.

Colour alone cannot tell you whether discharge is healthy. Thick or clumpy white discharge with itching, burning, redness or soreness may be linked to irritation or an infection. Avoid diagnosing or treating it from appearance alone, especially when symptoms are new or uncomfortable.

Talk to a trusted adult or healthcare professional if discharge develops a strong or unpleasant smell, changes noticeably in colour, amount or texture, or comes with itching, burning, pain, swelling or discomfort when urinating.
