Hormonal changes during puberty can increase the amount of oil produced by the skin, making acne more likely. Some people also notice predictable breakouts around their period. However, one pimple, its location or its timing cannot confirm a hormonal condition. Tracking the pattern and speaking with a healthcare professional can help when acne is persistent, painful or accompanied by other hormonal signs.
Polycystic ovary syndrome, usually called PCOS, is a hormonal condition that can affect menstrual cycles, ovulation, skin, hair and the way the body responds to insulin. People with PCOS can experience very different symptoms, and having PCOS does not mean that every symptom will appear. Despite its name, a person does not need to have ovarian cysts to have PCOS.
Puberty does not follow one exact age or schedule. In girls, visible changes commonly begin between ages 8 and 13, often starting with breast development. Body hair, stronger body odour, acne, growth changes, discharge and periods may follow gradually, but the timing and order vary between individuals. What matters is your overall pattern not whether your body matches someone else’s at the same age.
The reproductive system includes internal organs such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix and vagina, along with the external genital area called the vulva. These parts work together during puberty, the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. Learning their correct names can make periods, discharge, body changes and health questions much easier to understand.
Puberty is the natural stage when hormones begin changing your body from a child’s body toward an adult body. You may grow taller, develop breasts and body hair, notice changes in your skin and sweat, and eventually begin having periods. These changes do not happen all at once or in exactly the same order for everyone.
A period does not need to arrive on the same calendar date every month. Teenage cycles can naturally vary, especially during the first few years after periods begin. Learn how to count your cycle correctly, what timing can be common during adolescence and when a long gap between periods should be checked.
Feeling more irritable, tearful, anxious or sensitive before a period can be part of premenstrual syndrome, or PMS. These feelings are real and may be connected to changing hormone levels during the menstrual cycle. Learn how to recognise a premenstrual pattern without blaming every emotion on your period.
Period cramps happen when the muscles of the uterus tighten and relax to help release the uterine lining. Natural chemicals called prostaglandins control these contractions. Learn why cramps happen, where the pain may be felt and how to recognise when period pain needs extra support.
Period blood doesn't always look the same from one day to the next. It can be bright red, dark red or brownish, and these changes are often linked to how long the blood has been in the uterus and vagina before leaving the body. Learn what different period colours usually mean and when a colour change may be worth checking.
Wondering when your first period might arrive? Learn about common puberty changes that can happen before your first period, what signs may suggest your body is getting closer, and why there is no exact countdown.
Yes. PCOS can begin during the teenage years, but diagnosing it in adolescents is more challenging than in adults because many normal puberty changes such as irregular periods and acne can look similar to PCOS. Doctors usually look for symptoms that continue over time rather than making a diagnosis based on one sign alone.
Ovulation is the part of the menstrual cycle when an ovary releases an egg into a fallopian tube. It usually happens once during an ovulatory cycle, but its timing varies and it is not always on day 14. Hormones coordinate the process, and changes in discharge or mild lower-abdominal discomfort may sometimes happen around this time. Ovulation also creates the part of the cycle when pregnancy can occur if sperm fertilises the egg.
You may continue growing while puberty is still progressing, but nobody can predict your final height perfectly. Genetics has the biggest influence, while puberty timing, nutrition, sleep, overall health and hormones also affect growth. In girls, the fastest height growth usually happens before the first period; many grow approximately 2.5–5 centimetres afterward, although every timeline is different.
Clear or white vaginal discharge is usually a normal part of puberty and vaginal health. Its amount and texture may change during the menstrual cycle, and it may dry slightly yellowish on underwear after being exposed to air. Learn what healthy discharge commonly looks like and which changes deserve medical advice.
Periods may arrive early, late or with a different flow during the first few years after they begin. This often happens because the hormone system controlling the menstrual cycle is still developing. Learn which changes can be common, what else can affect cycle timing and when irregular periods should be checked.
A simple, judgment-free introduction to menstruation—what a period is, why it happens, and what your body is doing during those days.
PCOS is a hormonal condition that can be linked with irregular or infrequent periods, persistent acne, increased facial or body hair and scalp-hair thinning. Symptoms vary, and having one of these changes does not mean that you have PCOS. Diagnosis during adolescence can be especially complex because normal puberty can cause similar changes. This EVA self-check helps you notice the overall pattern, but it cannot diagnose PCOS.
Fine facial and body hair is normal, and its colour and amount naturally differ between people. However, new or increasing thick, dark hair on areas such as the upper lip, chin, chest or abdomen may sometimes be influenced by androgen hormones. This pattern is called hirsutism. It can occur with PCOS or other conditions, but facial hair alone cannot confirm a hormonal problem.
PCOS can affect different people in different ways. Some teenagers may have irregular periods, while others notice persistent acne, increased facial or body hair, thinning scalp hair or weight changes. Having one of these signs does not automatically mean you have PCOS, because many other conditions and normal puberty changes can cause similar symptoms. Doctors look at the overall pattern rather than one symptom alone.
Hormones are chemical messengers that travel through the body and help coordinate puberty, growth, ovulation and the menstrual cycle. Changing hormone levels may also influence skin, body hair, sweat, breast tenderness, energy and emotions. However, hormones do not explain every feeling or symptom, and different people can respond to the same hormonal changes in very different ways.
A small amount of facial hair can be a normal part of puberty. Hormones called androgens can make hair on the upper lip, sideburn area or chin more noticeable, and genetics also play a big role in how much hair someone has. Learn what is commonly normal, when hair growth may be linked to hormones such as PCOS and when it is worth getting checked.
Yes, ongoing or intense stress can sometimes make a period arrive later than expected or cause an irregular cycle. However, stress is only one possible explanation. Learn how stress may affect cycle signals, what you can do to support yourself and when a delayed period should be checked.
Before a period, some people feel puffy, swollen or uncomfortable in the tummy. This is often called bloating and can happen as part of PMS. Learn why bloating happens, what may help you feel more comfortable and when bloating should be checked.
A few small marks of blood can be difficult to identify. Is your period beginning, ending or is it spotting between periods? Learn how timing, amount and your overall bleeding pattern can help you understand the difference—and when unexpected spotting should be checked.
Day 1 is the first day of your menstrual cycle. Learn how to identify it, why it matters for tracking your cycle, and what you can expect when your period begins.
Skin colour naturally varies across the body, and friction, irritation or previous inflammation can sometimes leave an area darker. However, dark patches that also feel thicker or velvety especially around the neck, armpits or groin may be a condition called acanthosis nigricans. It is not dirt and should be checked by a healthcare professional because it can sometimes be linked with an underlying health condition.
No. Weight gain is a possible PCOS symptom, but it does not happen to everyone. People with PCOS can have many different body shapes and sizes, and someone can have PCOS while remaining within their usual weight range. Body size alone cannot confirm or rule out PCOS.
Breast tenderness can happen while breast buds and surrounding tissue develop during puberty. Soreness may also appear before a period because of normal hormone-cycle changes or after physical activity when the breasts move without enough support. Learn what common tenderness can feel like, what may help and which changes deserve medical advice.
Before a period, you may suddenly want chocolate, chips, sweets or comfort food more than usual. These cravings are common and can be linked to hormone changes, appetite shifts, energy needs and emotions. Learn why cravings happen, how to respond without guilt and when eating changes may need extra support.
Think your period has to come every 28 days? Not necessarily. Learn what a menstrual cycle actually is, why cycle lengths can vary, and why your own pattern matters more than a perfect number.
There is no single test that can diagnose PCOS. Healthcare professionals combine your medical history, menstrual pattern, symptoms, physical examination and, when needed, blood tests or an ultrasound. In teenagers, diagnosis is especially careful because many normal puberty changes can look similar to PCOS. Doctors also rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms before confirming the diagnosis.
Vaginal discharge is a normal mixture of moisture, cervical mucus, microorganisms and cells naturally shed from the vaginal lining. Fluid from the vaginal walls helps keep the vagina moist, while the cervix produces mucus that changes during the menstrual cycle. These secretions travel through the vagina and leave through the vaginal opening.
Puberty usually follows a general pattern, but it does not happen in exactly the same order or at the same speed for everyone. In girls, breast development is often the first visible sign, followed by body hair, growth changes, skin and sweat changes, and later the first period. Learn the usual sequence, what can vary and why your own timeline does not need to match anyone else’s.
Periods are a normal biological process, but myths, teasing and silence can make them feel embarrassing. Learning to use clear language, ask for what you need and choose trusted people to speak with can make period care easier. You decide what information feels private and how much you want to share.
PCOS stands for polycystic ovary syndrome. It is a hormone condition that can affect ovulation, which may lead to irregular periods or missed periods. Some people with PCOS may also notice acne, extra facial or body hair or changes in weight—but not everyone has the same symptoms. Learn what PCOS can look like, why it can affect your cycle and when it is worth getting checked.
Headaches can sometimes appear before or during a period. Some may feel mild and pressure-like, while others may be migraine attacks with throbbing pain, nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. Learn how cycle changes may affect headaches, what can help and which symptoms need medical attention.
Your period may be lighter, heavier, shorter or longer than it was last month. Some variation is common, especially during the teenage years when cycles may still be settling. Learn what can influence your flow, how to track changes and when a new pattern deserves medical attention.
Your menstrual cycle is more than just the days you bleed. Learn the four main stages of the cycle and what your body may be doing during each one.
