Beat the Bloat
By the eva team · · 1 min read
Before a period, some people feel puffy, swollen or uncomfortable in the tummy. This is often called bloating and can happen as part of PMS. Learn why bloating happens, what may help you feel more comfortable and when bloating should be checked.
1. Why Do I Feel So Puffy Before My Period?
If your tummy feels fuller, tighter or more swollen before your period, you are not imagining it. Bloating is a common premenstrual symptom, and it can make clothes feel tighter or your body feel uncomfortable for a few days.
2. Hormones Can Affect Water And Digestion
Before a period, changing hormone levels can affect the way the body holds onto water and how the digestive system feels. That is one reason bloating can happen around the same time as other PMS symptoms.
3. Small Comfort Steps Can Help
Some people feel better with light movement, enough water, gentle stretching and regular meals. Eating very salty foods may make puffiness feel worse for some people, so it can help to notice what your body responds to.
4. Bloating Is Not The Same As Weight Gain
Premenstrual bloating is usually temporary. It often improves once your period begins or within a few days after. Feeling bloated does not automatically mean you have gained body fat, so try not to judge your body based on a short-term change.
5. When Should Bloating Be Checked?
Talk to a trusted adult or healthcare professional if bloating is very painful, happens most of the month, becomes severe very suddenly or comes with vomiting, fever, major constipation or other symptoms that worry you. You deserve support if something feels unusual for your body.
6. Comfort First. Judgment Never.
Bloating before a period can be uncomfortable, but it is often temporary and manageable. Notice your pattern, try gentle comfort steps and ask for support if bloating is severe or keeps returning in a way that feels unusual.
