Why Cravings Hit Before Periods
By the eva team · · 1 min read
Before a period, you may suddenly want chocolate, chips, sweets or comfort food more than usual. These cravings are common and can be linked to hormone changes, appetite shifts, energy needs and emotions. Learn why cravings happen, how to respond without guilt and when eating changes may need extra support.
1. Why Do I Want Snacks So Much Before My Period?
If you suddenly feel extra hungry or start craving sweet, salty or comforting foods before your period, you are not alone. Appetite and cravings can shift in the premenstrual part of the cycle, and that does not mean you are weak or doing something wrong.
2. Hormones Can Affect Appetite
Hormone changes before a period may affect appetite, energy and the kinds of foods you feel drawn to. Some people notice stronger hunger, while others mainly notice cravings for sweet or salty foods.
3. Cravings Can Be About Comfort Too
Food cravings are not always only physical. When you feel tired, stressed, emotional or low before a period, comforting foods can feel more appealing. That does not make the craving fake—it just means your body and mind may both be involved.
4. Respond With Balance, Not Guilt
You do not need to panic about cravings or punish yourself for having them. It may help to eat regular meals, include protein and fibre, stay hydrated and enjoy favourite foods mindfully instead of judging yourself.
5. Track The Pattern, Not Just One Craving
Notice when cravings happen, what you tend to want and whether they come with tiredness, mood changes or PMS symptoms. Tracking helps you understand whether cravings are part of a cycle pattern or whether something else may be affecting your eating habits.
6. You Deserve Support If Eating Feels Hard
Cravings before a period are common. But if eating changes feel extreme, upsetting, out of control or connected to guilt, restriction or frequent overeating, it is a good idea to talk to a trusted adult or healthcare professional. Support matters when food or body worries start affecting daily life.
