Facial Hair: When Could Hormones Be Involved?
By the eva team · · 2 min read
Fine facial and body hair is normal, and its colour and amount naturally differ between people. However, new or increasing thick, dark hair on areas such as the upper lip, chin, chest or abdomen may sometimes be influenced by androgen hormones. This pattern is called hirsutism. It can occur with PCOS or other conditions, but facial hair alone cannot confirm a hormonal problem.
1. Could My Facial Hair Be Hormonal?
Everyone has some facial and body hair. Fine or light hair is usually a normal body feature. It may be worth getting advice when thick, dark hair begins increasing noticeably or appears alongside other body changes.
2. Fine Hair And Coarse Hair Are Different
Fine, soft hair can naturally appear across the face and body. Hirsutism describes thicker, darker hair growing in areas such as the face, neck, chest, abdomen, back or thighs.
3. Androgens Can Influence Hair Growth
Androgens are hormones present in everybody. Higher androgen levels or greater sensitivity to them can cause some fine hairs to grow thicker, darker and more noticeable.
4. PCOS Is One Possible Cause
PCOS can be linked with excess facial or body hair, irregular or absent periods, acne, oily skin and scalp-hair thinning. But having facial hair does not automatically mean that you have PCOS.
5. Look At The Whole Pattern
Notice whether the hair growth is increasing and whether it happens with very irregular periods, persistent acne or scalp-hair thinning. These details are more useful than judging one hair or one body area by itself.
6. A Healthcare Professional Can Check The Cause
A healthcare professional may ask about your periods, skin, hair growth, medicines and family history. When needed, blood tests may be used to check hormone levels and rule out other possible causes.
7. Sudden Changes Need Faster Advice
Ask for urgent medical advice if thick, dark facial or body hair begins growing suddenly, particularly if your voice is becoming deeper or you notice rapid changes in muscle development.
8. Body Hair Is Nothing To Feel Ashamed Of
Facial and body hair does not make you less clean, feminine or healthy. You can ask for medical support if the change concerns you, and you can also choose whether or not you want to remove the hair. The decision should be yours.
