Can I Swim on My Period?
By the eva team · · 1 min read
Yes, you can swim during your period. A tampon, menstrual cup or specially designed period swimwear can help manage the flow while you are in the water. Choose the option that feels comfortable, follow its instructions and carry a few spare supplies for after swimming.
1. Yes, You Can Swim on Your Period
Having your period does not mean you need to avoid swimming. With a suitable menstrual product and a little preparation, you can enjoy the pool or beach like any other day.
2. Choose A Product Made For The Water
Tampons and menstrual cups are worn inside the vagina, while period swimwear contains absorbent layers designed for use in water. Standard sanitary pads are generally not a practical swimming option, so choose a product intended for water activities.
3. You Never Have To Use An Internal Product
Tampons and cups can be useful for swimming, but you do not have to use one before you feel ready. Period swimwear may be another option, and choosing not to swim on a particular day is valid too. Your comfort matters more than pressure from other people.
4. Prepare Before You Enter The Water
Use a fresh product before swimming and pack spares for afterward. Your swim kit can include an extra tampon or cup pouch, dry underwear, period swimwear, a disposal bag and a towel. Follow the instructions for the product you choose.
5. Change And Freshen Up After Swimming
A tampon may absorb some pool or seawater, so change it shortly after swimming. Tampons should generally be changed every four to eight hours and never worn longer than eight hours. Empty and clean a menstrual cup or wash period swimwear according to its product instructions.
6. Swim If It Feels Good—Rest If It Doesn't
Swimming can be part of your normal period routine, but you do not need to force yourself when you have strong cramps, feel dizzy or simply need rest. Ask a trusted adult or healthcare professional for support if pain, dizziness or very heavy bleeding repeatedly stops you from enjoying everyday activities.
