BMI Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story

By the eva team · · 1 min read

BMI compares weight with height and can help healthcare professionals screen a teenager’s growth. For children and teens, it must be interpreted using age- and sex-specific growth charts not adult BMI categories. BMI can be useful, but it cannot distinguish fat from muscle or bone, describe where weight is carried or diagnose health by itself. Growth patterns, puberty stage, medical history and overall wellbeing provide important additional context.

What Does BMI Actually Measure?

1. What Does BMI Actually Measure?

BMI stands for body mass index. It is calculated using height and weight, so it gives a general measure of weight relative to height. It is a screening tool not a complete description of your body, fitness or health.

Teen BMI Is Not Read Like Adult BMI

2. Teen BMI Is Not Read Like Adult BMI

Because children and teenagers are still growing, their BMI is interpreted according to age and sex. It is usually plotted as a BMI-for-age percentile on a growth chart. Adult BMI cut-offs are not the correct way to interpret a teenager’s result.

BMI Cannot Tell What Your Weight Is Made Of

3. BMI Cannot Tell What Your Weight Is Made Of

BMI does not distinguish body fat from muscle, bone or other lean tissue. Two people with the same BMI can have very different body compositions, builds and levels of physical development.

One Result Is Only One Moment

4. One Result Is Only One Moment

A single BMI result cannot show your complete growth story. Healthcare professionals often look at how your height, weight and BMI change over time. The overall trend is usually more informative than one isolated point.

Health Includes More Than Body Size

5. Health Includes More Than Body Size

A healthcare professional may also consider your puberty stage, growth history, family pattern, energy, sleep, menstrual health, eating habits, movement, medical conditions and emotional wellbeing. BMI can help begin a health conversation, but it cannot replace this fuller assessment.

A BMI Category Is Not Your Identity

6. A BMI Category Is Not Your Identity

A BMI category is medical screening information not a judgement about your attractiveness, discipline or worth. Avoid trying to change your body because of an online result alone. A healthcare professional can explain the number privately, respectfully and in the context of your complete growth pattern.
