Bedtime Mobility Reset

By the eva team · · 2 min read

A short bedtime mobility routine can help you transition away from studying, screens and daytime activity. Gentle stretches may form part of a calming pre-sleep routine, but they cannot guarantee immediate sleep. Move slowly, breathe normally and stay within a comfortable range. This routine should feel relaxing rather than intense, painful or physically demanding.

Let The Busy Day End Gently

1. Let The Busy Day End Gently

You do not need to complete a workout before bed. This short routine uses small, comfortable movements to release some of the stiffness that may remain after studying, sitting or travelling. The goal is to slow down not to become more flexible or make yourself fall asleep immediately.

First, Make Sure Movement Feels Safe

2. First, Make Sure Movement Feels Safe

Choose a stable chair, clear a small area and wear clothing that allows comfortable movement. Do not begin if you feel faint, severely dizzy, acutely unwell or have significant pain. When you are recovering from an injury or managing a health condition, follow the guidance given by your healthcare professional.

Minute 1: Settle Your Shoulders And Breath

3. Minute 1: Settle Your Shoulders And Breath

Sit or stand in a supported position. Lift your shoulders gently towards your ears, then allow them to lower. Complete a few slow backward shoulder rolls while breathing normally. Avoid holding your breath or forcing the movement.

Minute 2: Move Your Upper Back

4. Minute 2: Move Your Upper Back

Sit with both feet supported and place your hands on your thighs. Gently round your upper back as your arms move forwards, then return to a comfortable upright position. You may open your chest slightly without forcing your shoulders backwards.

Minute 3: Reach Gently Side To Side

5. Minute 3: Reach Gently Side To Side

Raise one arm and lean slightly towards the opposite side while keeping both hips supported. Return to the centre and change sides. Aim for a mild feeling along the side of your body rather than reaching as far as possible.

Minute 4: Free Your Hips And Ankles

6. Minute 4: Free Your Hips And Ankles

While seated, slowly extend one lower leg and return it before changing sides. Then complete gentle ankle circles or lift and lower your heels. Keep every movement controlled and stop if it increases pain in your hips, knees, ankles or back.

Minute 5: Finish With A Slow Walk

7. Minute 5: Finish With A Slow Walk

Stand carefully and walk slowly around the room or march gently beside the chair. Let your arms move naturally, then return to a comfortable resting position. A calm bedtime routine may include gentle stretching, relaxation or quiet music, but it should not become another task you feel pressured to complete.

Pain Or Ongoing Sleep Problems Need Support

8. Pain Or Ongoing Sleep Problems Need Support

Stop the routine if it causes sharp pain, dizziness, weakness, numbness or tingling. Tell a trusted adult and seek professional advice when pain keeps returning, follows an injury or affects normal movement. Also ask for healthcare support when sleep difficulties continue and regularly interfere with your mood, concentration, school or daily life. Healthy sleep habits support adolescent wellbeing, but continuing sleep problems may need individual assessment.
