5-Minute Morning Stretch
By the eva team · · 2 min read
A short morning mobility routine can help you move gently after several hours of rest and create an active start to the day. You do not need to be naturally flexible or stretch deeply. Move slowly, breathe normally and stay within a comfortable range. Stretching should not hurt, and bouncing or forcing a position can increase the risk of injury.
1. Wake Up Your Body Gently
You do not need to begin the morning with an intense workout. This five-minute routine uses gentle movements to help your shoulders, back, hips and legs transition from rest into the day. Move only as far as feels comfortable.
2. First, Find A Steady Position
Stand with your feet comfortably apart near a wall or stable chair. Let your knees remain soft instead of locking them. Relax your jaw and shoulders, and take a few natural breaths before beginning. Hold the chair whenever you need extra balance.
3. Minute 1: Roll And Reach
Slowly roll your shoulders backwards several times, then forwards. Allow your arms to hang loosely. Reach both arms upwards only as far as feels comfortable, then lower them slowly. Keep breathing rather than holding your breath.
4. Minute 2: Stretch Side To Side
Raise one arm and lean slightly towards the opposite side without twisting or collapsing forwards. Return to the centre and repeat on the other side. Aim for a mild stretch along your side not pain or a competition to reach further.
5. Minute 3: Open Your Chest And Upper Back
Bring your hands gently behind your back or rest them on your hips and allow your chest to open without forcing your shoulders backwards. Then bring your arms forwards, soften your knees and gently round your upper back. Move slowly between both positions.
6. Minute 4: Wake Up Your Hips And Ankles
Hold a stable chair and lift one knee a small distance, then lower it and change sides. Finish with slow ankle circles or gentle heel lifts. These movements should feel controlled and should not cause joint pain.
7. Minute 5: March, Breathe And Check In
Finish with a slow march in place or an easy walk around the room. Let your arms move naturally and keep a pace where you can breathe and speak comfortably. Then stand still and notice whether your body feels more awake, unchanged or uncomfortable.
8. Stretching Should Feel Gentle not Painful
Do not bounce, force a joint or stretch through sharp pain. Stop if the routine causes pain, dizziness or makes you feel unwell. Speak with a trusted adult or healthcare professional when pain or stiffness keeps returning, affects normal movement or is related to an injury or health condition.
