Why Both Sides Look Different
By the eva team · · 2 min read
The two sides of your body are not expected to match perfectly. During puberty, one breast may develop earlier or remain slightly larger, and the two sides of the vulva may naturally differ in size, shape or appearance. Most small differences are normal variations. However, a new or rapidly increasing change, persistent pain, a breast lump or noticeably uneven shoulders or hips should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
1. Your Body Is Not A Perfect Mirror Image
Look closely and you may notice that one side of your body sits, grows or looks slightly different from the other. Small differences are common and do not mean your body has developed incorrectly. Puberty can make these differences easier to notice because many parts of the body are changing quickly.
2. Breasts Often Grow At Different Speeds
Breast development frequently begins on one side before the other. While breasts are growing, one may appear fuller, sit slightly differently or feel tender before the second catches up. A small difference may remain even after development is complete, and this is commonly normal.
3. The Two Sides Of The Vulva Can Look Different Too
The labia naturally vary widely in colour, size, shape and length. One side may be longer, darker or more visible than the other. Asymmetry is common and is usually considered a normal anatomical variation rather than something that needs correcting.
4. Clothing Can Make Differences More Noticeable
You may first notice asymmetry because a bra cup fits differently, one strap slips more often or clothes hang differently across your body. That does not automatically mean anything is wrong. A comfortable bra, adjustable straps or an optional insert on the smaller side may help clothing feel more balanced if you want it.
5. Uneven Shoulders Or Hips Are Worth Noticing
Slight differences in posture may be easy to notice during a growth spurt. But if one shoulder, shoulder blade or hip consistently appears higher or more prominent especially if the difference is increasing it is worth asking a trusted adult or healthcare professional to check it. These can be signs of scoliosis, a sideways curvature of the spine.
6. A Sudden Change Is Different From Gradual Asymmetry
A gradual difference during development is often normal. Ask for medical advice if one breast changes suddenly, a difference increases quickly or you notice a new lump, persistent one-sided pain, redness, warmth, skin changes or nipple discharge. These symptoms have many possible causes, but they should not be diagnosed at home.
7. Different Does Not Automatically Mean Unhealthy
The aim is not to make both sides of your body perfectly identical. Notice what is usual for you, choose clothing that feels comfortable and ask for support when a difference appears suddenly, becomes painful or keeps progressing. A healthcare professional can assess the change without judgement.
