Polycystic ovary syndrome, usually called PCOS, is a hormonal condition that can affect menstrual cycles, ovulation, skin, hair and the way the body responds to insulin. People with PCOS can experience very different symptoms, and having PCOS does not mean that every symptom will appear. Despite its name, a person does not need to have ovarian cysts to have PCOS.
Puberty changes more than your height. Hormones influence how your bones, muscles, breasts and body fat develop, so your hips may become wider, your waist and proportions may look different and your clothes may fit differently. These changes do not happen in exactly the same way or at the same speed for everyone.
Noticing more hair than usual on your pillow, brush or clothes can feel worrying. Increased shedding may happen after illness, intense stress, rapid weight change or another change affecting the body. Patchy hair loss, tight hairstyles, scalp conditions and some health problems can also cause hair fall. Because the correct care depends on the cause, persistent or sudden hair loss should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
Yes. PCOS can begin during the teenage years, but diagnosing it in adolescents is more challenging than in adults because many normal puberty changes such as irregular periods and acne can look similar to PCOS. Doctors usually look for symptoms that continue over time rather than making a diagnosis based on one sign alone.
PCOS can affect different people in different ways. Some teenagers may have irregular periods, while others notice persistent acne, increased facial or body hair, thinning scalp hair or weight changes. Having one of these signs does not automatically mean you have PCOS, because many other conditions and normal puberty changes can cause similar symptoms. Doctors look at the overall pattern rather than one symptom alone.
Yes gaining weight is an expected part of puberty. Your body needs additional energy and tissue to grow taller, strengthen bones, develop muscles and organs, and support changing hormones. Estrogen can also increase the percentage of body fat and change where it is stored, particularly around the hips and breasts. The amount and timing vary widely, so one person’s growth should not be used as a standard for another.
No. Weight gain is a possible PCOS symptom, but it does not happen to everyone. People with PCOS can have many different body shapes and sizes, and someone can have PCOS while remaining within their usual weight range. Body size alone cannot confirm or rule out PCOS.
Stretch marks are lines that can develop when the body grows or changes quickly. They are especially common during puberty, when height, weight and body shape may change rapidly. Stretch marks are harmless and usually become less noticeable over time, although they may not disappear completely.
There is no single test that can diagnose PCOS. Healthcare professionals combine your medical history, menstrual pattern, symptoms, physical examination and, when needed, blood tests or an ultrasound. In teenagers, diagnosis is especially careful because many normal puberty changes can look similar to PCOS. Doctors also rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms before confirming the diagnosis.
