Polycystic ovary syndrome, usually called PCOS, is a hormonal condition that can affect menstrual cycles, ovulation, skin, hair and the way the body responds to insulin. People with PCOS can experience very different symptoms, and having PCOS does not mean that every symptom will appear. Despite its name, a person does not need to have ovarian cysts to have PCOS.
Yes. PCOS can begin during the teenage years, but diagnosing it in adolescents is more challenging than in adults because many normal puberty changes such as irregular periods and acne can look similar to PCOS. Doctors usually look for symptoms that continue over time rather than making a diagnosis based on one sign alone.
Changes in appetite and food cravings are recognised premenstrual symptoms. They may appear during the days or one to two weeks before a period and can vary between people and cycles. Researchers are still studying exactly why cravings change, but shifts in reproductive hormones, appetite, energy needs, mood and food reward may all contribute. Having cravings does not mean that you lack discipline or that you must follow a restrictive “period diet.”
PCOS can affect different people in different ways. Some teenagers may have irregular periods, while others notice persistent acne, increased facial or body hair, thinning scalp hair or weight changes. Having one of these signs does not automatically mean you have PCOS, because many other conditions and normal puberty changes can cause similar symptoms. Doctors look at the overall pattern rather than one symptom alone.
There is no single test that can diagnose PCOS. Healthcare professionals combine your medical history, menstrual pattern, symptoms, physical examination and, when needed, blood tests or an ultrasound. In teenagers, diagnosis is especially careful because many normal puberty changes can look similar to PCOS. Doctors also rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms before confirming the diagnosis.
