Is My Flow Too Heavy?
By the eva team · · 2 min read
Period flow can be light, moderate or heavy, and it may change from one day to another. Instead of trying to measure the exact amount of blood, learn the everyday signs of heavy bleeding—such as changing products very frequently, bleeding for more than seven days or having your period interfere with school, sleep and daily life.
1. Is My Period Flow Too Heavy?
It can be difficult to know whether your period is heavy, especially when you do not know what other people experience. You do not need to measure the exact amount of blood. Your product changes, bleeding duration and daily experiences can provide helpful clues.
2. How Often Are You Changing Your Product?
Needing to change a fully soaked pad or tampon every one to two hours can be a sign of heavy menstrual bleeding. Frequently needing extra protection, changing during the night or experiencing leaks can also suggest that your flow is difficult to manage.
3. How Long Does Your Period Last?
Bleeding that continues for more than seven days can be considered heavy, especially when the flow remains difficult to manage. Recording the first and last day of bleeding can help you notice the pattern.
4. Is Your Period Interrupting Your Life?
Heavy flow is not only about product changes. It also matters when bleeding regularly interrupts sleep, causes leaks, makes you miss school or stops you from joining normal activities. Periods that significantly affect everyday life deserve support.
5. Notice Clots And Other Bleeding Signs
Repeated clots around the size of a large coin or bigger can be another sign of heavy bleeding, particularly when they occur with frequent product changes or bleeding lasting more than seven days. Clot size should be considered together with your complete flow pattern.
6. Feeling Tired, Weak Or Dizzy?
Heavy menstrual bleeding can lead to iron deficiency or anaemia. This may make someone feel unusually tired, weak, dizzy or short of breath. Tell a trusted adult or healthcare professional if these symptoms happen with heavy periods.
7. Heavy Periods Deserve Support
Talk to a trusted adult or healthcare professional if you repeatedly soak through products every one to two hours, bleed for more than seven days, pass large clots or find that your period disrupts daily life. Seek prompt medical help if heavy bleeding comes with fainting, severe dizziness or a racing heartbeat.
